Clifton was a poet who knew how to insert futuristic commentary that served the good of the community. She may not have known that she would one day become famous for them, but she was smart enough to figure out how to incorporate a cultural heritage that would become influential in time to come. Josephine Cameron states that "I think it's so important to remember things like slavery, to write poetry, to sing songs, and to teach them to our children" (Cameron). This quote shows that many of Clifton's poems help many different people and show them what exactly cultural heritage is. His poetry in itself is a cultural heritage because we are using it now. This is a great concept, because with this poem he or she can see what concepts were being learned when the Harlem Renaissance was going on. Many of Clifton's poems are about singing. This line from his poem Study the Masters shows him or her this: “You would understand the shape, the line, the discipline, the order, and America.” This shows a lot about how Clifton writes. Many interesting things come out of this poem. One in particular is that it lowercases America.
