Silas and Godfrey, well-known men in this book end up reaping one thing and sowing something else: did they deserve what happens to them? Silas had a happy life in the Lantern Yards, a place he called home. The man had a girlfriend and a prestigious position in the church of Cantieri Lanterna. A condition known to cause people to freeze for several hours, called cataleptic seizures, ruled Silas's life. Not knowing that this happened to him periodically, he would go into a soulless trance for hours and hours and not even know what had happened. Silas once had a girlfriend named Sarah, who later ends up marrying Silas' best friend, William Dane, who framed him for stealing money from the church and had Silas ostracized from the community, kicking him out of Lantern's backyards. William Dane married Sarah a month later. Silas Marner has moved to a place called Raveloe where the village seems so well hidden that Silas feels as if God himself cannot find him there. Living in Raveloe for fifteen years, Silas remained hidden in solitude. A series of events will cause a butterfly effect in Silas' life and help him open up to the community, and rekindle the life in him that could lead him to trust, love and be happy once again in his life. A feeling he hadn't felt since he returned to the lantern courtyard fifteen years ago. In the novel Silas Marner the characters seek happiness. A character named Godfrey Cass makes his quest disappointing when he relies on wealth and luck, instead of love, and discovers that this will not lead to happiness. Another character, Silas Marner, first looks at a pile of gold that only consumes his life, until he begins to love and care for a child, who finally brings him happiness. The lives of these characters demonstrate that we... middle of paper... will have hope in humanity. After finding a child he ended up loving more than his gold. The child's father was Godfrey, but Godfrey did not admit his son because it would hurt his chances with Nancy. Sixteen years later Godfrey finds that Dustan died in the stone pits near Silas' house where he had drowned with Master Marners money, this led Godfrey to tell Nancy that Eppie is actually his daughter, after this they both went to Silas to adopt Eppie. and Eppie ultimately tells them no and would rather stay with Silas, leading Eppie to marry Aaron Winthrop and revisit Silas's old house in the Lantern Court where he has recognized nothing since he left thirty-one years ago. The lives of these characters show that wealth or material objects do not bring as much happiness as love.
