Ethical judgments limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in both the arts and natural sciences. Discussion. When we talk about ethics we must keep in mind that it is based on the socially standardized concept that some things are good and other things are bad. Therefore what might be seen as socially unethical arts for some people, in another society or another time, will probably not be the case. The same goes for the natural sciences. And even if we take our Western society as a basis, there are some aspects of ethics and some specific topics that people do not have a standardized opinion about. Whether or not it is ethical depends on each individual's beliefs. In this essay I will focus on the fact that some people conduct unethical investigations (in the arts), experiments (in the natural sciences), or trials (in both disciplines). ), knowing that the people will not accept it. This is because they think that unethical methods will lead them to an end that is of greater good, or will cause more good than harm. Therefore, the question is whether it is worth using unethical methods to achieve a goal that may or may not do much good. There are two clear points of view, that of people who think that the end justifies the means and that of people who decide to follow socially established ethical rules. I will first give an example of unethical way of acquiring knowledge in natural sciences and show two points of view, then I will give an example of ethical limits in producing knowledge in arts and give two points of view. Animal testing is a good example of the problem of compromising ethics to get something good......middle of paper......are the methods we use to gain knowledge in the natural sciences and arts but those judgments don't always prevent people to use unethical methods. As long as the person performing the experiment or performance believes that what they are doing is right or rational, they will not stop doing it voluntarily. It is best to maintain a balance between emotion and reason when deciding whether something is ethical or not and whether something is worth doing. The problem is that most human beings are selfish by nature and will probably always choose what is best for them, what is most reasonable for them, without even caring whether it is ethical or not.
