She would leave her old life for a new one that doesn't seem guaranteed. If Frank were to break up with Eveline, she would find herself on the streets of a country unknown to her. His current life is poor, he has an abusive father and moving to Buenos Ayres would simply be a better life. Frank was ready to board the ship with Eveline, then she made a last minute choice. Eveline has decided to stay in Ireland, maintain her duties and responsibilities at home and stay with her elderly father. Frank, however, would have returned to Buenos Ayres, alone, but “he rushed over the barrier and called for her to follow him. He was shouted at to move on but he called her anyway. She looked up at him with a white, passive face, like a helpless animal. Her eyes gave him no sign of love, farewell or recognition. (6). Eveline realizes that Frank is no good for her.
