The use of the word “global” suggests the assumption that progress is needed everywhere, which is dubious. Global progress is not always a necessity. Development is not needed everywhere, but only in some places. It is clear that for some, progress is a necessity, but it is incorrect to assume that everyone requires it. According to Marian Tupy, “As long as there are people going hungry or dying from preventable diseases, there will always be room for improvement” (Tupy). The important caveat to this statement, however, is that people are going hungry and dying from preventable diseases. This is not the upper class of the richest countries, but the population of developing countries. Progress is a necessity for those who starve, suffer from avoidable diseases or lack basic human rights. Progress, however, is not so vital for those who live with an abundance of healthy food, medicine and freedom. It's not a bad thing at all that many people lead happy and healthy lives; it's truly wonderful. Since life is so wonderful for some people, however, the human race should not focus on global growth, but only consider the places that truly need
