In Fight Club it is clear that the narrator's lack of sleep is the result of an artificial feeling. By attending cancer groups and fighting in clubs, he begins to feel freer, but the looming torture of society is still present. Readers learn that the narrator is actually Durden. This split personality is the result of the narrator's lack of identity and the feeling of having to live partly with society and partly as a rogue. When Project Mayhem is created, he begins to completely lose himself and becomes fully Durden. He believes that if the company is not stopped, the space will be filled by Starbucks and Microsoft. He plants bombs in major credit card companies in hopes of erasing the debt and forcing the company to start over. He is incredibly dissatisfied with self-preservation and believes that everything must be lost to be free. This image is beautifully realized in the film when Durden kisses the narrator's hand showing burning skin to symbolize the pain needed despite advertising companies constantly trying to numb the pain. As Project Mayhem spirals out of control, some readers may worry about the message being told. There seems to be no end to the violence. This repetition and desire for physical pain is also used to represent emotional pain as all the characters try to figure out what their masculine aspect is.
