The narrator is in conflict with her environment and with John, but refuses to defend herself due to her lack of self-esteem. She says: “John doesn't know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer and this satisfies him. Of course it's just nervousness. It therefore weighs on me not to do my duty in any way. I wanted to be such a help to John, a real rest and comfort, and here I am already a comparative burden!” (Gilmann 2). In this insight into the narrator's mind one can see how she bases her self-worth on what her husband thinks of her and since she believes that everything she is to him is a burden, then she has no validation of her self-worth through anyone but him. .Restate Thesis- In “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman the Narrator's use of conflict throughout the story causes her to have a nervous breakdown caused by the narrator's conflict with the environment she finds herself in, the conflict with her husband and the conflict within oneself. The narrator's conflict with her environment, her husband, and herself causes her mental breakdown. If people looked beyond their own desires and the opinions of others, then they might be able to truly help others, instead of harming them by confining them to the patterns that people place on them..
