Recently a new field of interest and analysis has begun to take shape around the study of masculinities and the particularities of the social, physical, psychological and working lives of men in different historical contexts. With the growing number of male nurses in society are forced to be more open-minded than professions typically tied to one dominant sex. Nursing has stereotypically been thought of as a female career. Historically this has led to stereotyping and discrimination against male nurses. Such as being excluded from some subjects deemed sensitive in nature (O'Connor, 2003). Gender biases and role stereotypes exist in nursing education programs because nursing faculty are often composed primarily of women (Anthony, 2004). Nursing has been identified with the feminine way of caring for others. However, "nurses have constructed a gender-based identity that accords with what is acceptable to society...this allows a nurse to maintain masculine qualities while fitting society's expectations" of what is primarily perceived as role of women” (Loughrey, 2008). This research is an attempt to look at the largely untold history of male nursing in the workplace and in social space, and to attempt to question the gender stereotypes that have come to characterize nursing in South Africa. These stereotypes are as widespread among feminists as they are among the general public, yet somehow not much attention is paid to them. 3) Preliminary study of the literature and reasons for choosing the topic: The history of nursing is almost exclusively a story of women's successes, despite the fact that men have worked as nurses since the dawn of the profession (Mackintosh 199. ..... half of the article ...... aside from ptions and biases, so as not to influence the data Ethical considerations Research is seen as a scientific human endeavor that is organized according to a series of protocols, methods , guidelines and legislation (Gerrish & Lacey, 2010).
