I thought the students needed some hands-on activities during the brainstorming session, to continue expanding their thoughts. The next day each student received an empty shoe box. On the top of the cover I asked students to label it “how I think others think about my culture.” On the underside of the lid they should have written “how I think about my culture”. On the outside of the box they should have labeled "how I think others see me" and on the inside of the box they would have put "how I see myself". Students had to find pictures and words from magazines and/or create sketches that symbolized how they felt about each section of the box. They had to arrange the images to match the labels and paste them. The inside of the box is personal and can be kept private from others if the student wishes. I also posted the following essential questions on the board to help guide them: How do we form and shape our identities? How does what others think of you influence how you think about yourself?
