Culture is a way of life; a total way of life shared by a group of people, including speech, religion, behavior, technology, livelihood, government, and the local way of doing things. Cultural geographers observe elements of material culture and the physical landscape to determine the impact of humans on the area, which is what we were assigned for our project. We were asked to focus on a specific suburb and look at the local ethnic culture through types of housing, shops, organisations, etc. The suburb I chose was Lincoln, RI. I traveled there to take photographs of the area to help me understand the culture. I used all this information to determine the changes it has undergone over the years, reflecting the lives of its citizens. Many of Lincoln's historic buildings reflect the city's ancient culture and how it has transformed. One building I noticed was the Friends Meeting House. It was mainly used by Quakers who originally lived in the area; it was the center of their life. It became a safe place to live and practice one's faith as at that time not everyone agreed with their position on fragile topics, such as slavery. The Quaker way of life has largely died out, turning this building into a gathering place for people of all religions and ethnicities. This house reflects the change in the social and religious groups living in Lincoln. On the other hand, a building that remains part of the city's daily life is Conklin Quarry. It had been open since the mid-17th century and fired limestone to obtain lime, a key ingredient in cement, and provided work for citizens. It still works today, producing many other types of rock besides lime, such as granite... half of the card... commitment to the city and every time you wear red, it shows city pride. Each city is unique from one another; cultures vary from place to place, near and far. What sets a city apart is usually the historic areas/preservations. They show the change that occurs over time, how the lifestyles of citizens and the general atmosphere of the city have transformed. Although Lincoln is adapting global lifestyles, it continues to maintain its history by preserving its “famous” buildings and local establishments; they mix the old and the new. All in all, Lincoln's culture will continue to slowly change as time goes on, but it will remember to keep its history on display.
