Topic > Comparison and contrast between The Lottery and The Mystery...

“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman are two very significant and fascinating stories. These stories share similarities in symbols and themes but do not share the same plot which makes them different from each other. Additionally, “The Lottery” took place in a New England village where 300 people lived. This event took place once a year. Furthermore, the story begins when one beautiful morning everyone in that village gathered to celebrate the lottery. The environment was such that children collected stones while adults chatted among themselves. It was obligatory for every head of household or householder to take a slip of paper from the box. Additionally, the family that draws the black slip will have to draw it again to see who wins the lottery. Therefore, the lottery winner will be stoned to death. This is very shocking because in today's lottery events, the winner will receive money. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is the story of an anonymous narrator and her husband John, a doctor who rents a colonial house in the summer. Living in that house, the narrator felt strange living there. Her husband, John, who is a doctor and also his wife's doctor, felt that the narrator was in the grip of a nervous depression. He also states that when a person is depressed, every feeling is a strange feeling. Therefore, the narrator John was not given permission to work, but only to take medicine and recover quickly. This made the narrator so fixated on the yellow wallpaper in the former nursery she was in. She was depressed for a long time and became even more depressed.
