Topic > Internet Research - 1020

With the advancement of technology and the exponential increase in Internet use, academic and business professionals rely on electronic resources for information, research and data. The Internet offers the individual access to a sea of information, data and knowledge; furthermore, this large amount of information is available in seconds, rather than hours or days. The ease of access, availability, punctuality and vastness of online resources are pushing many professionals, however, to give up the use of paper sources. Online resources are useful for conducting scholarly research and “can be convenient, but they have shortcomings that make printed sources necessary for submitting high-quality assignments” (Dilevko & Gottieb, 2002, ¶ 1). Benefits of Online Resources The Center for Digital Futures' 2005 report finds that "among users age 17 and older, 56.3 percent consider the Internet to be a very important or extremely important source of information for them" (p. . 4). Online resource features save time and provide ease of access and availability to a wide range of materials. Print books and magazines, although they provide in-depth information on a particular topic, are not easily accessible and available at a particular time. To access many books, an individual must visit the local library or keep the book in their private collection, which could be expensive. You can access online resources anytime, anywhere. “Overall, there is greater access to information in a variety of formats from institutions, companies, and universities around the world” (Darrow & MacDonald, 2004, p. 22).
