Topic > Essay on Supervolcanoes - 722
Points out that the atmosphere would be greatly affected by gases released by a supervolcano. He said a supervolcano would produce an ashfall about half a meter thick. The ash would be so heavy that it would collapse roofs and power lines and bury humans and animals. Rain would be the only way to wash away the ash, however the rain would be acidic because it mixes with sulfur. Agricultural production would be drastically affected, thus making survival more difficult. While the ash is bad, the gases released are also a big concern. Sulfur dioxide in particular would be released and mix with water in the air which creates sulfuric acid. These droplets in the air will cause blocking of sunlight and cause “volcanic” phenomena”.
