Gay Marriage and its Issues Gay marriage has been an issue for a long time and as some states are legalizing it, many fear that it will soon be added as an amendment. The topic of gay marriage raises religious, legal and many other questions. In "What's Wrong with Gay Marriage?" by Katha Pollitt, the author supports gay marriage and wants it to be legalized. He claims that there is no problem with gay marriage and that it is all about separation of church and state. But in “Gay 'Marriage': Societal Suicide,” by Charles Colson, the author opposes the idea of gay marriage and says it will destroy society. Marriage is meant to bring a man and a woman together to produce children, but because of same-sex marriage, families are falling apart and crime is on the rise (Gay “Marriage”: Societal Suicide 577 ). Both essays talk about the positives and negatives of gay marriage and how it would or would not affect society. In “Gay 'Marriage': Societal Suicide,” the author's arguments were more effective and valid than those in “What's Wrong with Gay Marriage?” because it states that marriage must be between a man and a woman to bring children into the world. The incident in Norway, for example, when they imposed same-sex marriage, led to low birth rates society needs children because they are the founders of the future. Same-sex marriages not only affect birth rates, but also influence crime rates. Children raised in single-parent families are most likely to have become criminals and ended up in prison. Having only one parent affects how the child is raised and how he or she behaves in society. In “Gay 'Marriage': Societal Suicide” the author explains how children are raised in broken homes. tend to get more…half the card…with gay marriage?” by Katha Pollitt. He added his own experience working as a prison minister for thirty years and what he observed with prisoners' families. He “witnessed the disastrous consequences of family breakdown in the lives of thousands of criminals” (Gay “Marriage”: Societal Suicide 577). The issue of gay marriage should be addressed in the same way it has been addressed in the future. States that want to legalize it should do so, while states that do not want to legalize it should not. Since society and politics are divided on this issue, gay marriage should not be legalized in all states. This way it's fair to everyone, those who want to get married can go to states that allow it, while other states that don't like the idea of gay marriage shouldn't legalize it. If gay couples want to get married, they can go to a state where this is allowed.
