The mass production and use of video games has been associated with distorting the minds of the younger generations who play them. In preparation for writing this essay I did a Google search for video games in news headlines, one of the first things that came up was a headline about a fourteen year old boy who hanged himself after playing Call of Duty. In the subtitle they keep saying that other mass murderers were also avid Call of Duty players, this is how the media uses video games as a scapegoat to not face the fact that all these people had mental disorders that were not being treated because their parents did not want to face their problems. The only side of the argument that gets touted is the harm that video games can do, never the positive side, things like improved spatial cognitive development, team building skills and increased problem solving can be attributed to the video game play. However, the proliferation of certain negative aspects of video game play, blown out of proportion by the media, degrades the usefulness of video games and blocks the further development of something that should be beneficial to us. Arguments against video games point out that playing games that include violence increases the aggression of the person playing them, or that playing video games can be addictive. Video games need to be shown both for the good they can do and to get parents involved enough to understand what their kids should be using them for because the problems with video games have less to do with video games and more to do with people . use them. Arguments that video games have no causal effect on real-life violence are less publicized. In an article about video games Christo... halfway down the paper... plus it was discovered that he was mentally unstable and was bullied every day at school. Yet the article talked about how dangerous video games are. (Narain) This is the largest and most influential type of media that children of recent generations have been exposed to, it has surpassed music in terms of industry, people play it all over the world, yet we know so little about its effects that they have on us and what we could use them for they could create extremely useful innovations for the world. The media is spreading misinformation in a biased way and using video games as a scapegoat for violence that can more easily be attributed to poor parenting and abandonment, or simply to actual psychosis of the individual. So look at video games for what they are intended to do, stimulate, fascinate and entertain the human brain and not to create mindless violent monsters..
