Topic > Corruption in the elections of 1824 - 799

In politics agreements are often made, but are these agreements corrupt? After the War of 1812 the Federalist Party collapsed and left the United States with only one party. This time was called the era of good feelings. During this time the Democratic-Republicans were the major party and a corrupt bargain occurred in the 1824 presidential election. John Quincy Adams made a deal with Henry Clay to make Adams president and Clay secretary of State. Some basic information is important to understand the candidates and how they campaigned at that time. Ultimately, the results showed that political corruption helped Adams win the presidential election of 1824. Because of the Hartford Convention, the Federalists collapsed. This led to the triumph of the Democratic-Republicans and the era of good feelings. The Hartford Convention was primarily made up of Federalists who opposed the War of 1812. When the United States won the war, it increased Americans' national pride and decreased respect for Federalists who opposed the war. This tarnished the primacy of the Federalists and brought America into the era of good feelings. The era of good feelings brought a high sense of national and military pride. James Monroe said, “National honor is the highest national property of the highest value” (James Monroe Quotes). This means that national pride is the most important part of a nation. The Era of Good Feelings increased America's expansion and population, while creating a better lifestyle for American citizens. Americans began celebrating holidays like the Fourth of July, which not only gave people a great feeling of military pride but brought the nation even closer together. This great feeling led to the growth of the country. The And...... half of the document ......t happened (Adderson)Corruption in the 1824 election helped Adams become president.
