Education, training and mandatory reporting of falls can help with this. Fall prevention is important but also very difficult to reduce and eliminate. Reducing the risk of falls in nursing care settings requires the identification of risk factors; and this begins at the time of hospitalization. Know the root cause of the fall, keep up with when, who, where and how the fall occurred and document it. Other ways to help reduce the risk of falls include: • Documenting the vicinity of the faller's room • Increasing staffing • Allowing staff extra time related to shift changes Staff should have adequate training on what to do when and if a resident falls.
