The play Othello by the late William Shakespeare follows the story of a black army general blinded by jealousy of his wife Desdemona. In the course of the work, all the main characters who played a significant role in the development of the plot suffered some kind of fall. These characters initially possessed positive values that ended up playing a role in their defeat or loss. Iago, the antagonist of the play who sought revenge against Othello, possessed the value of power to prove himself as a leader, which later resulted in the corruption of his morals. His value of pride demonstrated his confidence which later led to his selfish personality. Furthermore, the value of Iago's ambition in succeeding in his ruthless plan against Othello helped portray Iago's trait of devotion towards achieving his goals. However, this ambition has overtaken his priorities. The ancient Othello, Iago, may have succeeded in taking away the lives he wanted revenge against, however, due to his actions in the game, Iago's positive values of power, pride and ambition ultimately turned against him . as the power over Othello and everyone else was clearly evident throughout the play, which made him a trustworthy person; however, this power acquired by Iago was later abused for the wrong reasons. Othello first made Iago his ancient (captain) of the army, which made people believe that he could be trusted and that he was reliable. Othello thought of Iago as a great leader who was able to provide him with reliable news when he said, "I know, Iago, / Thy honesty and love dwarf this matter, / Making it light for Cassio" (2.3.246-248 ). This quote is significant because it makes it clear that Othello believes Iago to be honest being his ancien...... middle of paper ......wrong on this level. At the end of the play, Iago managed to take revenge on Othello. On the other hand, many casualties and unexpected deaths are the result of Iago's ambitions. Only at the end did Iago realize this when he said: “Ask me nothing. What you know, you know. / From now on I will say no more” (5.2.316-317). This is significant because Iago says that he will not utter a word after realizing that Othello was not dead at that moment but Desdemona and Rodrigo were, both of whom he never intended to take revenge on. This ambition to take revenge on Othello proved fatal for Iago because his morals became corrupted and ultimately led to his imprisonment. While Iago's initial ambitions may have been pure, this value of ambition went in the wrong direction when he was ambitious for the wrong reasons.
