INTRODUCTION The Peranakans are descendants of migrants from China who settled in Singapore, Penang and Melaka, intermarrying with local Malays. The Malay word nyonya is actually a term of respect and affection for women, and nowadays refers to Peranakan cuisine. Peranakan cuisine is the interesting and unique combination of Chinese ingredients with variety of spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay community and other influences. Notable dishes are Ayam Ponteh, Assam Laksa, Cap Cai, Otak otak etc. Melaka, being one of the states that has a large number of Peranakan communities besides Pulau Pinang, has played an important role in the development and legacy of Nyonya food. After Peranakan descents, Nancy Mok Siok Kim had decided to open a Peranakan cuisine restaurant called Nancy's Kitchen with a mission to promote delicious Peranakan cuisine at fair and reasonable prices. Even though she didn't start her business in a nice way, her passion for her business helped her, against all odds, to finally become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Melaka with many achievements. PROFILE OF THE ENTREPRENEUR INTERVIEWED The proud owner of a well-known Nancy's Kitchen restaurant in Melaka was Mok Siok Kim. She is a Nyonya who is 46 years old. Before starting Nyonya's food business, at the age of 33, she ran a small catering business in her home and sold Nyonya's homemade biscuits and cakes and also worked part time. When she started the business, she felt that challenges had come her way. Since there were only three or four people in the restaurant at that time, she needed to do everything herself.
