The relationship between Preziosa and Maria is an insecure attachment. Throughout the film, Precious does not seek comfort or help from her mother. Mary fails to have a secure attachment to Precious by not providing a secure base or safe haven. Precious doesn't calm down easily when she's distressed and instead begins to take herself into a fantasy world. Precious after periods of anguish in the film has just moved away from her mother. In the scene where Precious yelled at the woman to leave and that she wasn't interested in an alternative school she tried to tell her mother that she hadn't said anything. After walking away from her mother, Mary called her back and ended up chasing Precious upstairs. Throughout the film Precious takes care of her own needs and avoids unnecessary interactions with her mother. When Precious misbehaves with her mother it is after Mary has already verbally abused Precious. To further describe the relationship, I would like to note that it is an insecure avoidant attachment. Precious searches for the alternative school on her own after a worker visits the apartment trying to talk about it. One influence on the insecure attachment between Precious and Mary may be the potential presence of parental depression. Mary may be depressed and tends to be more intrusive, angry and negative. In the film, Precious doesn't tell Mary why she was kicked out of school and doesn't talk about the sincere feelings she had with Mary before giving birth to Abdul. There was a scene after Abdul was born where Precious stood up to her mother and yelled back at her that she hadn't stolen her man, that her man had raped her. This appears to be the first time Precious directly says she was raped by her father in front of Mary. Throughout the film you would see glimpses... in the middle of the paper... at the bottom, how her race and gender influence the way she is seen or the way the unconscious works through her in related situations to his past. Precious and Mary's relationship had a dramatic effect on Precious's life. Precious's self-confidence, motivation, strength, and emotions were affected by Mary's behavior towards Precious. The way Precious was raised and treated growing up greatly influenced her view of the world and relationships. Despite everything, Precious managed to form a better bond with her daughter and even formed a bond with Mrs. Blue at the alternative school.
