When you admire the most famous graphic artists in the world there is one that stands out from the rest. MC Escher's works have amazed people around the world for almost a century. During his lifetime, Escher created 448 lithographs, woodcuts and woodcuts and over 2000 drawings and sketches. He is best known for his mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints. These works present constructions and studies of the infinite that seem impossible. His early works were mainly about the beautiful countryside and architecture of Italy. These and many more of his extraordinary works of art have been seen by millions of people around the world in prestigious galleries such as the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in Russia and the National Art Gallery in Washington DC.Maurits Cornelis ( MC) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in the Dutch province of Friesland. He was the youngest of three children born to George and Sarah Escher. The Escher family lived in Leeuwarden in a large house called "Princessehof", which would later become a museum and host exhibitions of MC Escher's works. Although he never did well in school and never graduated from high school, he always excelled at art. Escher studied architecture at the Higher School of Technology in the southern Dutch city of Delft. He received a deferment from joining the army to continue his studies, however, due to health problems he could not join the army and was forced to leave school. It was during this difficult period that he made many of his drawings and began to be recognized in the media as a great artist. The first was the art magazine The Studio, and the second was Time-Life, a very popular magazine in the United States. These articles would introduce the American people to the fascinating art of MC Escher. (Ziring, 1998) On March 27, 1972 MC Escher died at the age of seventy-four. Leaving behind 2000 drawings and 448 lithographs, woodcuts and woodcuts, and giving the world incredible works of art that still amaze its viewers today. Escher was not only an extraordinary artist, but also a lecturer, a writer, a designer of tapestries, murals and even postage stamps. His unique perspective on the world and his incredibly artistic way of sharing his visions will forever delight and intrigue art lovers of all ages.
