Outsourcing: Cheap Labor is Unethical Core countries outsource to various peripheral countries to save and earn more money, however, in the opinion of most, this is very unethical and a form of exploitation. Simply put, outsourcing is simply the migration of jobs from one country to another. Companies take advantage of poor workers abroad. While it might give them the opportunity to make money, they are essentially doing more harm. Low-cost labor is simply defined as working for very low pay that includes no benefits, working in harsh environments, being subject to abuse, and ultimately working excessively long hours without breaks or lunches. Cheap labor is unethical on several main points, core countries do not usually pay their citizens predatory wages, the environments poor workers work in are harsh and abusive, and finally, children work in these harsh environments. Before diving into further details, one must understand the types of jobs that are outsourced. Honestly, any industry can outsource, but most of the well-known companies like Nike, Coca-Cola, Wal-mart, and Levi are just some of the companies that leave their countries and pay low wages. Typically, most outsourced jobs include but are not limited to software design, market research, data entry, apparel, shoe sewing, and even medical transcriptions. This is evident when you make a phone call and connect with someone in a foreign country, who tells you that job has been outsourced. Most of the companies move to peripheral countries like China, Bangladesh, India, Thailand and various other countries. These countries are considered third world countries and most companies go to these places because... middle of paper... cramped and terribly hot conditions. Sometimes workers may have to stand for hours while working. Mostly these places with harsh conditions are called “exploitation”. Sweatshops are generally dangerous and place workers in dangerous situations. For example, in China, at an Apple factory, 62 workers were poisoned with a toxic gas called n-hexane that workers used to clean iPhone screens. Many of those who woke up had to go to hospital and stay there for months. N-hexane is known to damage the nervous system and many other organs. According to Wen Pei Po, of Chinahush, the report was: "The factory manager forced workers to use the dangerous gas in inadequately ventilated areas." (Wen Pei Po, Chinahush.com) This is one of many incidents where workers suffer in extreme conditions just to try to make money and provide for their families.
