Student Support Services (SSS) is a wonderful federally funded program on the Western Kentucky University campus that provides academic advising, personal counseling, tutoring, and other services to help students adjust to college life, succeed academically, and graduate from college. I have been working for this program since the beginning of my second year and am also a current participant. It's like a family away from home. I know pretty much everything there is about this program, but I wanted to go behind the scenes of the organization to inform others. Overview of SSSStudent Support Services is a TRiO program, along with Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound, which are funded programs by the federal government dedicated to helping low-income, first-generation students succeed in their academic achievement and higher education pursuits. Student Support Services works with 225 students each year and is split between three counselors. Since 1980, this program has enabled over a thousand students to earn a college degree. Their Services Student Support Services provide many different services where they communicate with their students face to face or via technological communication. Advisors help students develop course schedules, future planning and ensure general education classes are complete. Counselors help students with different problems, support them in setting realistic goals and give advice on personal issues. Participants also receive free academic tutoring for general education classes. Benefits and Extras Student Support Services has a benefit called priority registration where participants are given the option to register for classes before others in their classification.
