Society has sculpted gay into a word used to criticize and intimidate people who don't "fit in." Most commonly these people were members of the LGBT community. Today, millions of people stand up for themselves as members of the LGBT community after many years of oppression. Only in recent years has society begun to accept people who identify themselves and their sexuality differently than the norm. Third wave feminists fought for LGBT members to be who they truly feel they are without being ridiculed for it. In fact, in 2014, the United States Supreme Court approved a law that prohibits the denial of same-sex marriage in the United States; a huge step forward for third wave feminists and the LGBT community (same sex marriage laws). There is no doubt that the fight for fair and equal treatment of the LGBT community has come a long way and every day is another step closer to the goal. Third wave feminism has accomplished many successful feats over the past decade, and its greatest success has come from getting society to realize that people are more than labels. It is important to keep in mind that everyone is different and has different points of view. Not all third wave feminists agree with all the ideals of third wave feminism. It's also important to remember that third wave feminism applies to men and women
