The concepts we discussed in both my social work and African American studies courses such as white flight, housing discrimination, lack of school funding, and lack of access to appropriate healthcare were strengthened when I began my final year of practicum at a local community mental health organization. The agency served a client population that was more than 90 percent black. During the internship, I applied my classroom-learned skills such as communication, empathy, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based perspective to form a bond with clients and ensure the services provided by the agency were what clients needed . I combined my social work research coursework with my internship and designed a client satisfaction survey that assessed client engagement, satisfaction, and desired changes. These changes were presented to the board to help guide changes in operations and policies for the upcoming fiscal year
