In reality there are various dimensions of euthanasia as there are multiple connotations for it. Active euthanasia is the act of introducing something that causes death, such as a powerful drug. Passive euthanasia refers to the withdrawal of treatment or supportive measures that will lead to death, such as respiratory assistance or tube feeding. There is voluntary where consent is given, involuntary when someone is unable to speak for themselves and a guardian gives consent, and there is medical care. The really difficult question is: are terminally ill people really in the appropriate state of mind to give consent and understand the implications involved? According to research there are different views on this topic, and due to the patient's depression, it is often difficult to decipher whether the patient truly understands the choices he or she is making. Through reading numerous articles, books, and online posts you can determine that the idea of ​​euthanasia is corrupt in many ways and should not be allowed to prevail in our society. Currently, euthanasia is legal in only three countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, while assisted suicide is permitted in Switzerland and four US states. (Shaw 38) This has led to a lot of controversy here in the United States as there are strong points of view on both sides of the island, both with legitimate concerns. When does a person have the right to die with dignity?
