“Is society too dependent on technology?” Tom thought to himself as he drove towards Colorado. He was traveling with his family to visit his parents. It was a long trip and he had never been there before, so he decided to use his navigation system to get there. He typed in his destination and headed toward Colorado. Along the way his four-year-old son threw a glass of juice which spilled onto the navigation system. He didn't think he would need a map, and now he and his family are stuck on the highway in the middle of nowhere until they can get assistance. Many people would say that this is the result of an over-reliance on technology. Some even believe that today's generation would be better off without it. They think it's a luxury that should be taken away. However, this cannot be true. Technology can cure laziness, it is absolutely necessary and the benefits are much greater than living without it. Technology is a great resource to utilize if you want to be proactive. As stated previously, some say it causes too much laziness, when in fact it's the opposite. In fact, many use the lack of technology as an excuse to be lazy. Someone without a car might find it easier to receive unemployment and live with their mother because finding a job within walking distance is too difficult. If this man owned his own car he would be more inspired to go out, get a job and work hard, but instead he decides to stay at home and be unemployed. Some say that technology is not a good thing because it results in helplessness. According to Jenny C. McCune “Most of us (and our companies) rely so much on technology that we don't know what to do when it breaks” (McCune). For example, "Take the satellite paging fiasco that occurred last year, when Hughes... in the middle of the paper... more and better. Society shouldn't shy away from something that's so beneficial. That's why it's almost impossible to depend too much on technology.
