Throughout history, term limits have been a highly controversial issue, as well as a powerful reform when it comes to politics. Term limits are best defined as a restriction or limit on the number of times an official can be elected or serve. For years, American politics has been confronted with the movement to limit political terms. While there are some who disapprove of term limits for members of Congress, there are many Americans who approve. There is broad support for term limits, which shows us that the public is dissatisfied with what is currently happening in Congress. Many states, cities, and counties across the United States have established term limits for state and local officials. Congress currently operates on a seniority system. Individuals who have spent longer in office gain more power. As a result, these members of Congress are focused on staying in office, and that plan leaves limited room for new officials to have a chance to make changes. Term limits should be imposed on our men and women in Congress because this would allow for a more effective Congress. The problem with not having term limits is that one person in Congress wields too much power. As John Adams said, “Without [term limits] every man in power becomes a ravenous beast of prey.” (Smith 73). Likewise, Thomas Jefferson once stated, “To prevent any danger which may arise to American liberty from remaining in office too long, it is strongly recommended that the holder of such office should be required to resign after a certain period.” . (Smith 73). Our country needs term limits on Congress for several reasons. Currently, there are members in Congress who serve very long terms. Members of the House of Representatives serve......middle of paper......rse legislature." (Epstein 855). Term limits would make participation in Congress more possible. Millions more Americans would find it a attractive option for them. To summarize, term limits currently apply across the country in state legislatures and are working. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 15 states currently have term limits for legislatures the likelihood of turnover in state legislatures. Term limits also weaken seniority systems in state legislatures. Term limits help nontraditional candidates like Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians run for seats in state legislatures system so that people who care about the future of our nation and our state can and do compete fairly to represent us. This is what democracy was meant to be, and this is what it can be again.
