The typical middle-class American family consists of four people, two children, and two working adults. The total household income amounts to an average net salary of $84,431 per year, of which $60,000 is spent on daily expenses (United States Census Bureau). Health care in the United States is currently a free market where private companies charge customers for medical coverage. In the current system, medical coverage costs approximately $8,400 per family per year (increasing healthcare costs). Only about $16,000 remains for emergency or other recreational money. Typical middle-class American families would also have other luxuries that working-class families would not have, and lack some of the luxuries that upper-class families have. These numbers would change slightly with universal health coverage because there would not be $8,400 set aside for health insurance, however, salaries would be lower due to an increase in taxes taken out to help pay for universal insurance. Middle-class families would not be affected as much as working-class families struggling to survive the month on a limited budget. Not all employers pay for insurance for their employees, and these people must go to another company to get insurance. This likelihood could cost the family more and increase their expenses. Other companies pay all of the employee's necessary insurance claims and only charge a small deductible. It depends on the employer, but if there were passage of the Maldonado 2 universal health care law, all people would have the same basic coverage along with any additional coverage they choose to pay for.
