Have you ever thought about those little words in fine print that tell you where a product was made? How about the last time you put tires on your car? Before making a purchasing decision, did you stop and ask where tires are made? Probably not! You heard the only words you wanted to hear...good and cheap! When did we stop caring about where a product is made, or have we ever done so? Why should it matter anyway and what does it matter? Some might argue that free trade and imports give us purchasing power. They believe that cheaper goods result in more money in our pockets to purchase other goods. This theory is a farce with little to no data to support it. Buying American products supports job growth, the environment and human rights. The impact on us, our children and the future of America is greatly influenced by our purchasing decisions. Start by blaming the company itself. We have become an on-demand company. Americans want it now, fast and cheap. Anyone have more patience? Hesitating at the drive through of a McDonald's or at the green light. Within seconds someone will honk or flip you the bird. Loyalty is another lost trait. People have a tendency to change jobs for some more money or better benefits. Employers will fire their employees to save money and increase their profit margin. The characteristics of our society are reflected in the outcome of purchasing trends. How many of us can honestly say we make a valid effort to purchase goods produced in our own country? In our fast-paced world where both parents work, raise children, do social activities and everything in between, who has time to make an effort?
