The story of "A Raisin in the Sun" is set in a time when racism was still very much alive and threatening to the African-American race. A black family, that of the Youngers, is influenced by this reality throughout the work. Each family member is uniquely affected. This essay will explore these events and consequently the effect they have on the family. Young people as a whole hope to make something of themselves and overcome unspoken cultural limitations on the black family unit of the period. The main character Walter ends up dealing with most of the tensions that these challenges bring to the family. As a result he becomes alienated from other family members and over time becomes a harsh and negative person towards every other character. This presents a conflict of authority as Walter's mother, Lena (Mom), wishes to help guide the struggling family and encounters resistance from her son. With the recent death of her husband she has seen order and stability in the family collapse and is more worried than ever about the direction the family will take. To further complicate matters, they all live in a small apartment, which further intertwines each character's fate. This ends up causing conflict as each family has different dreams which in turn causes other members' dreams to collapse. This manifests itself in the relationship between Walter and his mother; Walter has a low-paying job and it makes him crave any opportunity to create more money. As a result, he constantly invests in get-rich-quick schemes and other bad investments. Lena wants coherence, stability and traditional gradual growth in the kindred group and is therefore naturally against these developments. Even though Walter is seen as a… middle of paper… and does so through the means of his boyfriends. He discovers an opportunity to do so by moving to Africa, but almost misses it due to his brothers' persecution for money. She discovers through experience and sound advice that money isn't everything and it won't help her achieve all her goals in life, it will simply make the journey easier. In this story, it seems that money is the root of all barriers that prevent this family from realizing their dreams. Eventually young people band together and discover that if you let it, money will control your life. So it's important to make proper use of your investment before it, like raisins, dries out over time in the sun. Though they face multiple economic and racial challenges, the Younger family uses adversity to reveal the common values that hold them together.
