Topic > Double Standards in Today's Society - 701

The main goal of society is progress, but throughout the centuries, barriers have hindered that progress. Gender and race have been the two biggest battles society has faced. Traditional gender roles, ethnic diversity and employment opportunities are all influenced by double standards. Along with these, the media and politics are strongly influenced by discrimination and contradiction. Double standards impede progress in society. Traditional gender roles no longer exist. The old pastimes of women washing dishes and men bringing home paychecks have vanished by the wind. In a recent poll, 74% of people rejected the idea that women should return to traditional gender roles. (j2of2) During World War II women had to take jobs that were considered male-oriented. While the men were in battle, the women made munitions for the war effort. This was the beginning of a new era where women would bring home the income. Since then, 40% of women have become the breadwinner of the family.(j 1 of 2). Women are also fighting traditional gender roles when it comes to education. Women now have the same educational opportunities as men. Previously the men of the family had to be educated and the women had to support them through domestic work. Some may say that gender roles no longer exist, but perhaps they aren't looking closely enough. Traditional gender roles are still present and above all they hinder progress in society. In some Christian denominations such as Orthodoxy and Catholicism only men can be priests or senior leaders such as pope or bishops. In families, it is above all the woman's responsibility to take care of the children. Gender is not the only place where the contradiction c...... at the heart of the document ......on the Martin case turned into a case on race despite the fact that during the prosecution the race has never been a reason(f1of1)For the most part the media refrains from referring to certain races of people beyond showing images. The media has a tendency to distort and overturn facts and as a result becomes very biased. Society is held back by a multitude of things, one of which is double standards. Double standards in gender roles, race, the workplace, politics, and the media all play a major role in suppressing progress in society. The evidence not only shows that double standards still exist, but that they impede the progress of society. Double standards are seen in everyday circumstances, whether or not society decides to stop the progression of these contradictions, and discrimination will determine society's outcome..
