The contrast of interesting ideas, situations, and characters not only enhances how we see the subject matter but also how we understand them. Consider Katniss and Peeta in Suzanne Collin's book The Hunger Games (can you tell me I'm already a fan? :)). The two characters are completely different in personality and appearance. Katniss is cautious, cynical and distrustful. In contrast, Peeta is calm, stable, compassionate, and reasonably confident. He is not weak in any way, just more emotionally available due to his love for Katniss and desire to keep her safe. I haven't read the Divergent series yet, but it's clear from the films that there is a clear difference in how average citizens operate and how divergent individuals operate.
