1 Chapter 1 - Introduction1.1 Background of the StudyThe automotive manufacturing industry today is going through many challenges, development and innovation. Manufacturing companies cannot ignore these changes because they happen constantly and at a rapid pace. Globalization has created a competitive market for the manufacturing sector due to different needs in product mix and volume. Many companies cannot keep up with the market because they still operate using traditional production systems and understand that a paradigm shift is needed. This general problem of not being able to remain competitive with the changing environment has stimulated many research efforts to search, study and design a new production system. Studies and research contribute to improving companies' approach to production. In the 21st century, manufacturing has become very product-centric because consumers demand their products meet their specifications, with ever-changing needs. Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMS) are the result of extensive research to create a new manufacturing system. The reconfigurable manufacturing system is a new approach that addresses the above-mentioned problems. RMS is designed so that it can respond quickly to changes in the market, be it the production of new product models or fluctuations in product volume. An approach like this takes full advantage of the high throughput of dedicated manufacturing lines (DMLs) and the flexibility of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). Responsiveness is also an advantage of RMS and refers to the speed with which a company can change objectives, produce new and different products. In short, the function of the reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS...... middle of paper ...... me frame of manufacturing automotive parts2. The automotive parts considered must be part of a family of products that are essentially the same parts, but involve different operations and work sequences4.
