With structural functionalism, change is seen as threatening or destructive (Larkin, ch.2), but there is constant change (whether it be technology or new discoveries). Furthermore, society is more about competition for power or resources than how people work together as a unit. Symbolic interactionism focuses too much on roles; not everyone has a role because there are homeless and sick people who may not be able to benefit or play a role in society. According to Larkin, symbolic interactionism does not view society as a whole but through interactions that share meaning. Conflict theory is more realistic for today's world because it is based on the challenges people face and does not focus on relying on just one person.
