Charles Manson once said, "You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something, nowadays everyone's crazy." Charles Manson was the man who brought fear to Los Angeles by brainwashing people into becoming part of his cult and together they formed "The Family" and killed 9 innocent people. During the Manson murders many people in Los Angeles did not feel entirely safe due to the fact that these murders were random and many thought that someone could be the next victim. Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. . He was the son of sixteen-year-old Kathleen Maddox and Colonel Scott who left Kathleen during her pregnancy. (Guinn 39) According to law2.umkc.edu, in November 1939, Manson's mother and uncle were sentenced to five years in prison for robbing a gas station. Also in 1947, Manson's mother tried to send him to a foster home but was unsuccessful because she had no room for Manson. A court then sent Manson to a boys' school in Terre Haute, Indiana. Manson was an amazing child, constantly acting out and having fun. He was constantly evading and running away from his training schools and youth centers. Law2.umkc.edu states that Charles Manson's first crime was when he robbed a grocery store, Manson was caught in his continuing criminal acts and was sent to a youth center in Indianapolis. While there Manson escaped with a cellmate and they both committed two armed robberies. In 1951 Charles Manson went on the run with two other men, the three were eventually caught driving a stolen car. After this act Manson was sent to the National Training School for Boys in Washington DC, from there he ran away a number of 18 times, after being sent to too many different places, Charles Manson finally found himself... middle of paper... .. cult, many plays, films and television programs have also been made about him. Today there is very little form of The Family left, but Charles Manson still receives mail from people who want to join and become part of his family. The Manson Murders were a huge wake-up call for America, they also showed the fall of the hippie counterculture and the carefree attitude of 1960s society. People saw that Manson was capable of manipulating people into killing other people and was the mastermind behind these murders. People then realized that they needed better security in the Los Angeles area, many people moved out of Los Angeles or bought guns and keep them at home for safety. (crimelibrary.com)
