The name Sigmund reflected the historical and cultural beliefs of his family's Jewish heritage. Jews have been a persecuted minority in Europe for many centuries. As a teenager the family moved to a Jewish neighborhood in the Vienna ghetto. Jews shared a common plight in the struggle to succeed in this anti-Semitic world. Jewish culture remained profoundly important to Freud throughout his life. He was proud to be Jewish and at the same time found himself between traditional Jewish life and a new path of assimilation. Founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud suffered a very traumatic and difficult childhood that left a legacy of fear, insecurity and imbalance.
