Durian is the fruit of various tree species belonging to the Durio genus and the Malvaceae family. The name durian comes from the Indonesian and Malay word duri (thorn) together with the suffix -an (to construct a noun in Indonesia and Malaysia). It is one of the most famous and controversial fruits in the world and highly appreciated and desired throughout Southeast Asia. Considered by many to be a delicacy, it also owes its fame to its unique and indescribable smell. Durian is the "King of Tropical Fruits" and refers to two aspects of the fruit: its superlative, highly nutritious pulp; and its appearance, which recalls the thorny thrones of ancient Asian kings (Subhadrabandhu & Ketsa, 2001). The durian is believed to be native to Borneo and Sumatra, and is found wild or semi-wild in southern Tenasserim, Lower Burma, and around villages in Peninsular Malaysia. The tree may grow beautifully but produces little fruit. Durian is ultratropical and cannot be grown above an altitude of 800 m (2,600 ft) in Malaysia.
