Topic > The achievement gap: the causes of the results...

The environment from which the student comes is different from student to student. Students with lower SES tend to stand out in school and in the classroom. Schools that have larger populations of low-income families are more likely to have lower-quality teachers, poor curriculum, and lower expectations that lead to poor academic achievement (Benders 2004). Low SES students may go through many different situations at home that may motivate them to attend school. On the other hand, this may prevent them from succeeding in school. Teachers must know how to make the student feel safe and able to learn, even in the various situations that occur at home. School is the only place where they can be who they want and expand their abilities
