Topic > Implementing Multicultural Education into the Curriculum

The world is currently going through a cultural shift. This change will not only impact the people of the nation, but will also influence how education is viewed. The constant fight for diversity in classroom teaching demonstrates that these reforms will eventually become a standard for the entire classroom. There is no doubt that American classrooms must be prepared to embrace the diversity that is bound to happen. However, it is important that teachers are prepared to meet this challenge. In-service teachers must be prepared to address the effect that diversity is currently having in classrooms. However, these teachers must be provided with the tools to help develop a culturally responsive classroom. This includes providing in-service teachers with ongoing training and assessment that can help them achieve this goal. Pre-service teachers are in a better position to be prepared for diverse students. Teacher education programs must be prepared to provide these future teachers with a program that teaches them to create a classroom focused on multicultural education. The OECD notes that “although teaching diversity is challenging, children around the world deserve the best efforts and investments imaginable, as well as the educational benefits of receiving a high-quality, relevant and empowering education” (273) . There is no doubt that problems exist in the area of multicultural education. This should not discourage teachers from attempting to implement it into their curriculum. The teacher can help develop understanding of multicultural education as researchers continue to examine it and learn its implications. Despite critical opinions about teaching teachers about diversity, many educators have made great strides to help this reform, and while there are some teachers who are still fearful, there is uncertainty about the benefits it has for all students.
