Just one person can be enough to change someone's perspective on life. In the novels A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, both novels illustrate that when a man enters into a relationship with another woman, it can hinder his ability to serve in the military. As the relationship becomes stronger, you will begin to realize that love is more important than war. Ultimately, the relationship will end in pain due to an unexpected event that will prevent the characters from being together. Getting into a relationship can be extremely powerful because it will not only change your priorities, but it will make you think about the future so you can be with the woman you are in love with. Finding a woman to whom one is attracted will cause one to look at life differently. Frederic, an ambulance driver for the Italian army, is with his friend Rinaldi, a surgeon, in a British hospital. While Rinaldi talks to Helen, a nurse, Frederic sees a woman to whom he is immediately attracted. “Miss Barkley was quite tall. She was wearing what looked to me like a nurse's uniform, she was blonde and had tawny skin and gray eyes. I thought she was very beautiful” (Hemingway 18). Although Frederic's main concern is helping the Italian army, he is immediately attracted to Catherine Barkley, which will eventually affect his job as an ambulance driver. Even if he doesn't realize it yet, in time Caterina will be more important to him than his service in the Italian army. While Frederic is inside the hospital, he decides to have a conversation with Catherine. As Frédéric goes to Catherine, she asks him a serious question: "Have you ever loved anyone?" “No,” I said. "You have beautiful hair", I said... middle of paper... ..unfortunately the horse breaks Robert's leg and he is forced to tell Maria that he will not be able to continue to leave the area: 'Guapa, he said to Maria and took both her hands.''Listen. We will not go to Madrid-'Then he began to cry.'No, guapa no,' (Hemingway 463)Robert and Maria's future in Madrid has ended suddenly because there is no other way for Robert to make it to the Gredos Mountains. As much as Robert wants to continue, he can't, which makes Maria angry that her relationship with Robert is over. Even though Robert cannot be with Maria in his future, he realizes that Maria has a strong influence on him because she not only changed his priorities but allowed him to think about his future with her. Sometimes the future may not go as you would like due to an unexpected event.
