To become a truly effective leader, you must encapsulate the various behaviors related to the learnings from the above course in your person and demonstrate these behaviors on a daily basis. This course allowed me to identify four behaviors that all leaders must implement to be effective. The first of which is that a leader must be an inspiration. To do this, a leader must define the appropriate vision and direction for the organization and provide a path to achieve the defined goals. Furthermore, a leader must induce appropriate levels of motivation so that each employee has sufficient incentive to work towards the organization's goals. As discussed in class, motivation can be achieved through factors such as rewarding hard work and providing the right opportunities for employees. While these are motivating as employees want to be fairly compensated and do work they find valuable, inspiration comes more from organizational culture. A leader will inspire by setting a tone that appreciates each employee's contribution, no matter how small. Additionally, employees are inspired when they work collaboratively in a team setting and can leverage individual strengths to achieve organizational goals. Unfortunately, inspiring employees isn't enough. These situations occur when employees face challenges in achieving goals. In such situations, a leader must exert power and influence to advance desired goals. Although the course identified five sources of power, I believe only three should be considered for an effective leader. The first is legitimate power (6), which is often considered the primary source of power in the organizations I have worked in. The source of power comes…middle of paper…for continued success and growth while understanding the circumstances employees face on a daily basis. The learning gained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course was invaluable. From this course I learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed during the eight-week course provided the unique insight needed to be an effective leader. The knowledge acquired allows you to identify the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continuously develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am able to better shape my leadership style and goals so that I can reach my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things well and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
