Milestone 1: Literacy Review Paper Love means loving someone unconditionally. Loving them flaws and all. Love is a part of being human. How can you love without accepting the society you live in? Nowlan's poem “He Sits on the Floor of a School for the Retarded” uses a normal adult man to experience love and human nature by teaching him that love is love regardless of the person's mental state and that everyone is equal. Nolan presents the setting of the classroom full of children, but the children have grown up. At first, an adult man begins to feel uncomfortable around adults with mental problems because he sees them as different from others. The actions of adult men are common because people in the world do not consider people with mental problems to be normal, but being normal or abnormal is part of human nature. Human nature is made up of emotions that are wildly separate from being human. In the poem it states...I don't know what to do with the young woman (I call her a woman...but I think of her as a little girl."(lines 22-25) Nowlan was trying to get the readers to see how the adult man judges a woman because of her mental state. People always seem to judge a human being because of their mental disability Nowlan society shows how everyone is different, but everyone is equal. Everyone wants to love and wants to be loved "Grown man understood acceptance, regardless of whether you are different from each other." It has to be intimate, it's just a feeling that everyone needs from friends and family. Feeling an emotion is part of human being. This is what makes human nature. “Fire” is what separates every human being, but it also unites
