Nowlan's poem “He Sits on the Floor of a School for the Retarded” uses a normal adult man to experience love and human nature by teaching him that love is love regardless of the person's mental state and that everyone is equal. Nolan presents the setting of the classroom full of children, but the children have grown up. At first, an adult man begins to feel uncomfortable around adults with mental problems because he sees them as different from others. The actions of adult men are common because people in the world do not consider people with mental problems to be normal, but being normal or abnormal is part of human nature.
