IntroductionResearch has shown that stereotypes and prejudices in the workplace help explain why disparities in income and treatment exist in the workplace, leading to overall gender inequality in this area. This article will evaluate this phenomenon from a psychological perspective and examine the topic with respect to theories of prejudice, discrimination, ingroup/outgroup bias, group interaction, self-theory, and social identity theory, among others. others. These theories will be discussed because they are relevant to explaining the roots of inequality and socialization that causes men to play a certain role and women another. Additionally, the consequences of workplace inequality will be presented to understand what may result from the inequality experienced. This is a significant issue because it is important to recognize issues such as these in order to strengthen equality in the workplace and make further progress to improve the inclusion of women in society as a whole. Furthermore, it is important to know how this inequality affects the sense of self of the parties involved so that strategies can be provided to both men and women to make this inequality less prevalent in the future. Literature Review In their article, “Workplace Gender Bias: Not Just Between Strangers,” authors Nadler and Stockdale discuss the forms of gender bias that still exist in the workplace for women working in male-dominated fields. They suggest that “gender role stereotypes” and “subtle forms of gender bias” make it harder for women to enter these fields and can result in “reduced pay, stricter standards… in performance evaluations, and a reduced likelihood of advancement.” (282-84 ). Women who do not conform to society and......middle of paper......cheerfully go to men. It may also be helpful to try to somehow implement a gender-neutral hiring process, so that any biases on the part of hiring managers do not impact the inequalities that arise from the hiring process before women can even work in a field dominated by men. Another possibility to reduce inequality would be to give more rewards and reinforcements to women who perform well in their occupations. If women know they are doing well, they may doubt themselves less and be more confident in asking questions and expressing their opinions without fear that what they say will be belittled by those around them. In conclusion, this is a very important issue that needs to be studied more so that women and men are treated more equally where they work. A lot of progress has already been made and spreading awareness can only help reduce this problem.
