In Voltaire's Candide, the theme of optimism is prevalent throughout the novel. The reader is able to see within the novel Voltaire's opinion on optimism and how he then satirizes it to reflect his own perspective. Satire, defined as the use of humour, irony, exaggeration or ridicule to expose and criticize the stupidity or vices of people (Oxford dictionaries), is shown through Voltaire's use of idea of optimism and how this thus reflects his feeling towards himself expressed in his time. Pangloss is Voltaire's primary vehicle for expressing his opinion on optimism. Pan meaning everything and gloss meaning to be shiny or to touch on something show how Pangloss is a character within the novel. No matter how pessimistic the outlook of a situation may be, Pangloss consistently overlooks this pessimism to see a positive outcome or outcome because of the philosophies he follows. Since Pangloss is a role model for Candide, Candide constantly tries to see the light in situations, even though he may not always believe what he often tries to tell himself.
