King Louis XVI was born in the palace of Versailles on 24 August 1754. When he was 16 years old his marriage was arranged with Marie Antoinette of the Habsburg Empire, his mother was Marie Teresa. The French ruling family and the Habsburg family wanted the couple to marry so that the two ruling families would have a stronger relationship. In 1774 his brother died making him the new king of France. Growing up he did not receive the proper training to govern France, making him a weak leader. He also wasn't interested in ruling France, he wanted to do much more. He had problems managing state affairs, was very shy and had difficulty making decisions. Despite all these problems he was very interested in governing more effectively than his grandfather. He had inherited a lot of debt and people hoped he would help them. Monarchs had difficulty raising money from the people because the aristocracy was exempt from paying taxes.
