Markwardt is a self-pitying man. He thinks he is the unluckiest person in the world. No one could suffer more than him. He can do anything. It is not possible for him to achieve anything in life. Then he sells lighters and the story of how he became blind. He's selling emotions to people, so they feel sorry for him and buy the lighters and give him a little extra for the sad story. Most likely I think the beggar will continue to sell lighters. He may feel embarrassed for a while, but nothing else will happen. The reason for this is simply this; for many years the beggar has been limited in his thoughts and self-esteem. He just focused on this misery of all the things that limited him rather than continuing to try to succeed. It's so easy for him to dwell on the past and not commit to the future.
