The reality for those in lower social classes is that they are less able to provide for their own needs, so they will be unhappier than those in higher social classes, regardless of attitude or behavior . Hout (2016, p. 219) concluded that although money cannot buy individual happiness, “the status and security” that accompany membership in a higher social class was linked to greater happiness for wealthy individuals . Adding further pressure to individuals from lower social classes is the fact that “research shows that people are just as likely to move down as they are up in the class system” (Carter, 2011, p. 227). Expecting individuals trapped in this downward spiral to simply change their attitudes and behavior to improve their happiness misses the complexity of how inequality between social classes affects those individuals. Even if they have come to accept their situation as right, this does not mean that they are happy that this is the norm (Carter, 2011, p. 221). Social class is a significant factor, for those of lower classes, in determining an individual's opportunities for happiness and must be taken into greater consideration when happiness is
