Since the beginning of time, Earth has helped all its inhabitants survive. The Earth provides all living organisms with air, shelter, vegetation, water and food. However, with continuous technological advancements, people have forgotten how our daily actions can harm the environment. We live in a highly self-centered age where people only care about themselves without any connection to the environment or others. Although it is evident that the Earth has changed due to pollution and waste, people prefer to ignore these problems. However, there are those who go out of their way to educate people about the severity of damage to the environment. In particular, a woman named Julia “Butterfly Hill” confirms that an altruistic act like tree-sitting can bring awareness to the harmful effects of deforestation. Julia “Butterfly” Hill before the act of sitting on the tree embodies the common disposition of people and the environment, but makes people aware of her mission to save the redwood tree while in the act; furthermore, after the act, she embodies her goal as a committed advocate for the sustainability of the Earth. Julia "Butterfly" Hill's life before the act not only betrays nature by leading her life through unconscious decisions, but violates the ecosystem, leading to humans' characteristic ignorance of the environment. From Don Oldenberg's "Julia Hill Butterfly, From Treetop to Grass Roots" we learn of her upbringing in which Julia grew up "very poor" and set her sights on making money with no aspirations to "make the world a better place." His “back door activist” attitude shows that nature was not his first priority. Likewise, she was insensitive to the consequences her lifestyle had on the ecosystem… middle of paper… after recognition, she remained committed to her mission. Julia's popularity has helped people become more discerning about logging issues; who then wanted to help the cause. Additionally, his lectures have helped educate people about solutions to create a more sustainable Earth. It has been said that fame transforms people. I say it is inevitable, the most humble and practical would certainly find pleasure in such attention. People should not worry about its appearance and start contemplating what the world would be like if we continued this ignorant path of destruction. It is painful to see that people care more about a person's image rather than his inner qualities. A person of good character and who works wholeheartedly to help make the world a better place should be rightly recognized. A person who embraces such qualities deserves the utmost support and appreciation.
