Millions of phone calls are made every day around the world. In the 1980s, a teenager asked his parents for a telephone in his bedroom. Today, more of the American population owns a phone than those who don't. It's a concept we take for granted and probably always will. In prisons you only get one phone call. Lady Gaga's "Telephone" music video, featuring herself and Beyonc֢é Knowles, offers an extreme look at prison life, sexuality and the importance of that phone call. It debuted in 2010 as one of the most controversial music videos of all time and is compared to films due to the way it was directed and its length [9:32 minutes]. The video begins with Gaga being taken to a prison cell at the "Jail for Whores". She is guided to her cell by two female guards wearing minimal clothing. Once in the cell, she is stripped of her designer clothes and thrown to the ground. A censored naked Gaga lies on the ground as the guards walk away and reference is made to the fact that Gaga does not have a penis. This was a reference to many of her critics who claimed she was a man. The next scene sees Gaga walking towards the prison yard wearing a pair of sunglasses with a dozen or more lit cigarettes attached to them. He sits and acts very intimate with another inmate. It is examples like these that express the overall idea of the video, that socially unacceptable concepts and actions should be considered normal. In a way, this can be seen as a myth, because very few Americans are willing to accept social uniqueness. To be an American is to be unique and individual. When the inmates come in for lunch, a violent fight breaks out in the cafeteria and Gaga watches until she finds herself... halfway through the paper... a concept we take for granted and probably always will. Telephone's music video is one that will stand out to American audiences. pop culture for decades. It will be called the Cadillac of music videos simply because of its popularity. It reflects American identity as confusing and changing, a description I completely agree with.
